Ship Tavern - Brown Palace Hotel, Denver

The children had a wonderful surprise for me this New Year. A visit to my ol' fave the Ship Tavern at the Brown Palace Hotel. French onion soup, prime rib sandwich and a very dry vodka martini. Eleven has promise.

Christmas in Telluride - Part I

Steeped in mining history, built on hippie ideals and quirky as all get out. Telluride is a magical town tucked in a box canyon that refuses to let its head get big. The skiing is world class, the people kind and the vibe....

LEGO- Guggenheim

Between this and the Fallingwater edition the kids and I can both have fun playing with toys this holiday.

Blue Forest - Luxury Tree Houses

Sleeper House - Colorado

One of the quintessential pieces of interesting architecture in Genesee, Colorado is the "Sleeper House" on the I-70 corridor. Minutes from the metro area is this jewel of design built in 1973 by famed local architect, Charles Deaton. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this home has changed hands many times over the years and recently was purchased out of foreclosure for a paltry sum. Any kid growing up in Colorado knows this structure as you wind your way up the mountain to your favorite ski hill. It became globally famous when it was used in Woddy Allens Sleeper.

Let's hope they do the right thing.

Paolo Soleri - Arcosanti Bells

Years back while sunning in Scottsdale my wife and I made a pilgrimage to Arcosanti the magnificent world that Paolo Soleri created in the Arizona desert. Proceeds from each bell help keep Arcosanti alive. The bells themselves are amazing, cast in bronze (some ceramic) they have an intimidating presence and the sound...beautiful. Another great gift idea at the holidays for friends or family that understand and love architecture & design.

Arapahoe Acres

The most documented example of modernist residential architecture in the Denver metro area is Arapahoe Acres, a remarkable neighborhood in Englewood developed by Edward Hawkins. Here, Hawkins partnered with architects Sternberg and Dion between 1949 and 1957 to build 124 modernist homes.

The first post-World War II residential subdivision listed as a historic district in the National Register of Historic Places.

Nebraska Dugout - 1890's

I happen upon interesting things while hunting. This years Wild Turkey hunt was no exception. Hidden in the plains of Nebraska are a few original dugouts. The dugout played a significant and important role in the settlement of the Great Plains prior to modern transportation, when the availability of mass produced building materials allowed more permanent structures to be built.
Listed on the Nebraska Historic Register
Location, secret.

Kifaru Tipi

Arguably the coolest and best designed 4 season shelters around. I can't say enough about the quality and concept behind these Tipi's. Colorado made and designed. If you are looking for a simple, hardcore tent..look no further. They also come equipped with a travel-lite wood burning stove that pacs in your pack.
